Classification, Labelling and Packaging

All chemicals require to be classified and labelled. By means of identification and marking of hazardous material with danger symbols injurious effects during handling can be prevented.

The CLP Regulation (EC) no. 1272/2008 for the classification, labelling and packaging of chemical substances and mixtures is the implementation of the GHS (Globally Harmonized System) in the EU. It gradually replaces the EU Directives 67/548/ EEC (DSD) and 1999/45/ EEC (Dangerous Preparations Directive).

Important changes in the CLP Regulation compared to the previous Dangerous Preparations Directive are:

  • 28 hazard classes categorized according to physical, health and environmental hazards
  • New hazard pictograms and signal words
  • New risk and safety phrases/R- and S-phrases are replaced by the GHS hazard statement (H- and P-sets)
  • New criteria for the classification of substances and mixtures
